The Village of Capitan has a Story Unique to the World


Capitan is the birthplace and burial site of the world's most famous idol, Smokey Bear.

Capitan is a village in South West New Mexico. The village is proud on Smokey.

Smokey became so famous that now he is the worldwide symbol of preserving healthy and beautiful forests and wilderness areas. The story of Smokey is in the backpack of kids hiking and biking through mountains, fishing in forest lakes and riding horses on forest trails.

Smokey died when he was a very old bear and was buried in Capitan, in the same mountains where he was rescued from the forest fire.

Long, long ago there was a forest fire in the beautiful mountains of Capitan.


A brave little baby bear was found, clinging to the trunk of a burned tree.

The bear was named Smokey by the brave firefighters who rescued him. All villagers as a symbol to protect the forest adopted Smokey.
